Alternatives
Alternatives to NoteGPT, TurboScribe, DownSub and Tactiq for text from video
Eight tools that get text out of a video or recording split along one line, whether the speech already has captions: for captioned YouTube videos the transcript is free almost everywhere, and the real differences are AI quotas, subscriptions and support for files with no captions, where MediaScribe charges from $0.033 per minute with no plan to renew. The table, three kinds of tool, four detailed comparisons and a short guide to choosing follow.

Three kinds of transcript tool
Most tools in this list fall into one of three groups, and the group tells you more than the brand.
- Caption readers (DownSub, youtube-transcript.io, the Tactiq YouTube tool) fetch the track a video already has. They cost little or nothing and return nothing when there is no track.
- Speech recognition services (TurboScribe) take an uploaded file and write out what is said. They work on any recording and charge for the processing, usually by subscription.
- AI summarizers (NoteGPT, Glasp, Eightify) put a language model on top of the transcript and ration it with quotas, credits or a connected AI account.
MediaScribe spans all three: captions are read for free, AI on them is free, and recognition is paid by the minute. That is also why it is not the cheapest choice for every job.
One-to-one comparisons
Four tools have their own comparison page, each with prices side by side and a section on where that tool does better.
- NoteGPT compared with MediaScribe: AI quotas against free AI on captioned videos; NoteGPT leads on mind maps, slides and batches.
- A pay-per-minute option next to TurboScribe: a subscription against packs; TurboScribe costs less above roughly 5 hours a month.
- Saving YouTube subtitles without DownSub: more video sites there, reading, search and AI here.
- The Tactiq YouTube tool and its alternative: meeting notes there, YouTube text and exports here.
How to choose in four questions
Four questions narrow the list to one or two tools.
- Does the video have captions?
- Yes: any caption reader works, and the YouTube transcript guide shows the free route. No: you need speech recognition, as on the page about converting a video file to text.
- How many hours a month?
- Over about 5 hours every month, a subscription such as TurboScribe usually costs less; under that, packs of minutes do.
- Do you need visuals?
- Mind maps and slides point to NoteGPT; text summaries and notes are covered by the AI video summarizer.
- Is it a live meeting?
- Then Tactiq, which transcribes Google Meet, Zoom and Teams calls as they happen.
What MediaScribe doesn’t do
MediaScribe has gaps that some tools above fill, and they are listed here plainly.
- No batch processing of playlists or whole channels.
- No live transcription of calls.
- No mind maps, slides, quizzes or flashcards yet.
- No speaker labels.
- Links from YouTube only; files up to 500 MB and 4 hours after sign-in.
- On a day of very high demand, free AI on captioned videos may pause until the next day.
What is guaranteed instead: the transcript of a captioned video stays free for good, the price of anything paid is shown before it starts, and the full price list sits in the plans section.
