TurboScribe alternative
TurboScribe alternative for audio, video and YouTube to text
MediaScribe is the TurboScribe alternative for people who transcribe now and then rather than every day: there is no subscription, speech recognition costs one minute of balance per minute of recording from $0.033, and any YouTube video with captions gives its full text and AI summaries for free, without an account. The short answer, a side-by-side table, where TurboScribe wins, prices at three volumes and how to move a file follow below.

Short answer
TurboScribe suits steady, heavy transcription; MediaScribe suits a few recordings a month and YouTube work.
If you transcribe more than about 5 hours of speech each month and can pay for a year up front, their paid plan costs less. Below that volume, or for videos that already carry captions, MediaScribe costs less or nothing, and you never cancel anything because nothing renews.

Why people look for a TurboScribe alternative
Most searches for a replacement start with the payment model, since the paid tier there is a subscription billed monthly or yearly.
- A subscription for occasional work. Someone with one interview in September pays $20 for September, or $120 for a year in advance.
- The 30-minute cap on no-cost uploads. A 50-minute lecture does not fit that tier at all.
- YouTube links counted as uploads. A captioned video already has its text; spending a transcription on it is a waste of the daily quota.
- An account before the first try. Some people want to see the output before they sign up.
Where TurboScribe is the better choice
TurboScribe is the better choice for anyone who transcribes many long recordings week after week.
- Volume. At $10 a month on a yearly bill, the plan has no cap on minutes; our cheapest hour is $1.97, so above about 5 hours of speech per month the subscription works out cheaper. On the $20 monthly bill the break-even moves to about 10 hours.
- Long recordings. Up to 10 hours or 5 GB per upload, against 4 hours and 500 MB here.
- Batches. Up to 50 uploads in one go; MediaScribe takes them one by one.
- Short daily clips. If every clip runs under 30 minutes and you need no more than 3 a day, their no-cost tier may cover you completely.
A podcast studio, a court reporter or a researcher with a weekly stack of interviews will usually spend less there.
Where MediaScribe is the better choice
MediaScribe is the better choice when transcription is occasional or when the source is a YouTube video.
- A YouTube lecture or talk. If it has captions, the full text with timestamps is free and instant, and a summary, detailed notes, an article or a chat with the video cost nothing either. The YouTube to text page shows the steps.
- One interview a month. A 60-minute interview uses an hour of balance, $2.99 from the smallest pack, and whatever you do not use stays for later.
- Trying before paying. The first recording needs no account: transcribed in full up to 10 minutes, the first 10 minutes of a longer one, for an upload up to 100 MB.
- Work after the transcript. Every AI analysis of a transcribed recording is included with its minutes, so notes and an article add nothing to the bill.
Audio formats, limits and a sample of the output are on the page about how to transcribe audio to text; video files have their own guide on converting video to text.
What each costs at 1, 5 and 20 hours a month
At 1 hour a month MediaScribe costs $2.99, at 5 hours $13.97, and at 20 hours $39.98; TurboScribe costs $10 a month on a yearly bill or $20 month to month at any of these volumes.
| Speech to transcribe | MediaScribe, packs | TurboScribe, yearly bill | TurboScribe, monthly bill |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 hour | $2.99 | $10 | $20 |
| 5 hours | $13.97 | $10 | $20 |
| 20 hours | $39.98 | $10 | $20 |
The table leaves out both no-cost tiers and counts uncaptioned recordings only. Captioned YouTube videos cost $0 here at any volume. Our packs: 1 h for $2.99 · 3 h for $7.99 · 10 h for $19.99 · 30 h for $58.99; the full price list is in the plans section.
How to move a recording over in three steps
Moving a recording from TurboScribe to MediaScribe takes three steps and no account for the first file.
- Pick the source. Paste a YouTube link into the box at the top of the page, or drop an audio or video file there.
- Check the price. A captioned video shows its text straight away; for anything else the page shows the minutes before you press Transcribe.
- Export. Save the transcript as TXT, Markdown, SRT or VTT, or run a summary first. Subtitle files can be reshaped with the subtitle converters.

Frequently asked questions
Is MediaScribe free?
Yes for any YouTube video with captions: the transcript and AI analyses cost nothing and need no account. Speech recognition, for a video without captions or your own file, costs one minute of balance per minute of recording, from $0.033; the first recording is free without an account.
Is TurboScribe free?
Partly. Its pricing page, checked on 7 October 2026, lists 3 free transcriptions a day of up to 30 minutes each, after you create an account; longer files and batch uploads need the paid plan.
Do I need an account on MediaScribe?
No for captioned YouTube videos and for your first recording. Whole files after that need sign-in by an email link, with no password.
Is there a subscription?
No. Minutes come in one-time packs (1 h for $2.99 · 3 h for $7.99 · 10 h for $19.99 · 30 h for $58.99), nothing renews, and unused minutes stay on the balance. Refunds are available within 14 days.
Can MediaScribe transcribe a YouTube link the way TurboScribe does?
Yes. Paste the link: if the video has captions, the text is free in seconds; if it has none, speech recognition runs and uses minutes.
Is my file safe with MediaScribe?
Your upload is deleted from the server as soon as its sound is extracted, and the audio pieces are deleted after recognition; the privacy policy lists every step. We describe only our own handling here.
What can’t MediaScribe do?
No batch uploads, no speaker labels, no files over 500 MB or 4 hours, and no live meeting transcription.
On a day of very high demand, free AI on captioned videos may pause until the next day; the transcript itself never does.
